KNITTING NEEDLES
When choosing knitting needles, there are a lot of options to consider. Along with the shape of your needles, you should consider the length as it limits how many stitches you can make in a row. The type of knitting needles you should choose will depend on the type of project you are working on.
Types of Knitting Needles
Straight Knitting Needles
SINGLE POINT
A great choice for new & beginner level knitters. Single point knitting needles are also a staple tool for knitters of all skill levels. Single point needles are easy to knit with and are made in sizes from 0 (2mm) to 50 (25mm) with a wide range of color options.
DOUBLE POINT
Double-pointed needles are used to knit in the round. Double point needles are perfect for items that are too small for circular needles. For example, when knitting a glove with circular needles, the stitches that make up the glove's fingers become too tight to be worked around the circular needles.
Circular Knitting Needles
Circular needles are the best choice for knitting in the round and also can be used for knitting flat pieces as well. They consist of a knitting needle on each end with a cord joining them. These are used for projects like hats, sweaters, socks, sleeves, mittens and more.
Cable Needles
Knitting cables (cabling) adds twists to your pattern. Without a cable needle, cabling involves rearranging stitches by allowing them to slip off the needle and catching them again. This technique takes practice but is not as daunting as it seems! Typically, cable needles have a bend in the middle, like a fishing hook, but also can be U-shaped, straight or safety-pin shaped.
Knitting Needles - Materials
Bamboo Knitting Needles
Bamboo knitting needles are great for beginners. Your yarn will not fall off the needles as easily as metal knitting needles. Many knitters prefer bamboo knitting needles over metal for projects that require yarn to stick in place to the needle, such as cabling needles. While bamboo is a sustainable, eco-friendly material, they are more prone to breaking when working with tight stitches.
Metal Knitting Needles (Aluminum)
Metal knitting needles are typically made of aluminum. Aluminum knitting needles provide a smooth surface for yarn to slide over and are great for knitters who make tight stitches. Metal needles are less likely to snag or catch rogue sections of multi-ply yarn. Metal needles are extremely durable but they are heavier, cold, lack flexibility & make clicking sounds while knitting.
Carbon Fiber Knitting Needles
Knitting cables (cabling) adds twists to your pattern. Without a cable needle, cabling involves rearranging stitches by allowing them to slip off the needle and catching them again. This technique takes practice but is not as daunting as it seems! Typically, cable needles have a bend in the middle, like a fishing hook, but also can be U-shaped, straight or safety-pin shaped.
